דוגמה לתרגום ספר

קטע מתרגום של סיפור אוטוביוגרפי על חייה של משפחה בתקופת השואה:

Claudio stood quietly in line with the rest of the kids. The Nazi officer asked them to take off their clothes. Claudio was not circumcised and took his clothes off like all the other kids. The officer said a few prayer words in Hebrew, but the kids did not seem to respond to any of them. Claudio did not respond as well as if he did not understand a word. The words were: "Shma Israel Adonai Eloheinu" (Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God) and then the Nazi officer stopped and asked the kids to continue. The kids did not say a word and Claudio pretended he did not understand anything. He remembered he had heard these words at the house of Grandpa Hugo.

Claudio recalled the days he was sent by his parents to give away clothes and shoes in the ghetto and received pocket money in exchange, which he hurried to bring home. He did not play much with the kids at the ghetto and did not hear Hebrew words. The prayer was one of his few memories from his life at the ghetto but he remained silent. The Nazi officer became convinced that there was no Jewish kid at the kindergarten and took off with his soldiers.
